AW has chosen to call their IMR18500 an 18490. There is really no functional difference.

AW has always provided excellent and consistent batteries, with accurate specs. Although they cost a bit more the AW IMR18350 and 18490 are probably the best out there. They both are nipple tops.

    Can't find a direct 18490/18500 comparison, but here's a head to head 18350 test.

You'll note the AW easily outpaces the Efest @ 3A, with better voltage and total mAh. Note the AW actually exceeds it 700mAh rating, while the Efest falls far short of it's so-called 800mAh one. .

Last night he asked to try out my vape pen and though he still smoked analogs, he said he could probably give it a shot to make the complete switch. I know he's watching me right now, as I've been smoking the whole time he's known me and never ever tried to quit. I am 100% converted, and am excited to help him whenever he asks

We use AW's in our APVs, but for his mod, the SO wants to get Sony batteries.

Okay, since no one's jumped in yet, HOW new to vaping?

Congratulations for adopting a healthier habit than smoking......but brand new to vaping, I would stay far, far away from DIY juice. Other than the whole nature of it, the precautions required (and the dangers if certain chemicals are handled wrong), etc., there is the simple fact that your tastebuds are still, essentially, healing, and what you like can change from month to month, not to mention one week to the next right now.

3.7 volts is the industry "standard" in basic vaping. Any device that puts out a fixed voltage (isn't variable) is putting out roughly 3.7 volts. Generally it's the perfect balance of power to the heating element (coil) that produces enough heat to give you good vapor.

If you wanted to cook an egg, you could cook it on "low" and wait 15mins- but that's too long. If you cook it on "high" you burn the outside before it cooks in the middle. So somewhere there is a happy medium that balances the cooking time with thorough cooking. Same with vaporizing. 3.7 volts is the "medium" temp that gives you a nice vape. BUT...

Not all juices are created equal. And not all heating elements (coils) are created equal. Some juices can stand a little more heat and still taste good or even better. Some guys smarter than us figured out how to make custom heating coils that can vaporize lots of juice and produce big vapor and lots of taste. And so Variable Voltage was born. With variable voltage you can cook on medium low or stir fry your juice on high, but it requires a proper set up with coil and juice to make a difference.

For most of us "regular vapers" we will never vary our voltage outside of roughly 3.7 - 4.0 volts. In a regular off the shelf coil and tank set up 3.7 volts is the sweet spot and the only variation is the juice. Some juices can take a little more voltage and taste good. Some juices don't like a higher temp (in an off the shelf set up). Variable voltage give you the ability to finely adjust your voltage to your juice.

When you get in to advanced vaping and building your own coils then Variable voltage gives you lots more "playground". You can build super duper coils that can take high voltage and throw massive clouds but this requires more skill and technique and an aptitude for electronics and tinkering that a lot of people don't want to be bothered with to be safe. (Safety is a factor when dealing with advanced set ups. If you don't know what you are doing you can create an ego pipe bomb - I'm being dramatic)

Devices like the Vamo described above are slightly more advanced than a fixed voltage e-cig and are relatively safe because the tanks you put on top of them are still off-the-shelf and user friendly. But they do give you the variability to adjust voltage just like the ego twist or the vision spinner style batteries. They come with a few more features and bells and whistles and they are cool looking and match larger tanks and such.

Wattage - the short version is that the term wattage is used to describe the power that is generated when you put a certain voltage across a coil or heating element. When you "vary the wattage" you are still just "varying the voltage". It's looking at the same equation from two different sides and relatively meaningless to the average vaper.

    Hope that helps a little.

I would say the Vamo, the Sigelei Zmax, the MVP (box mod), the SVD, all good APVs to start out with. As Irwink said, with MOST of those, you will have to purchase separate batteries and a charger (depending on how much you vape, I would say at least two 18650 batteries, I started out with three, just to be safe), and a good quality charger - I prefer the Nitecore intellicharger. The MVP comes with a built in battery, but you'd need to use your existing VV battery while the MVP is charging (which doesn't actually take that long).

If anybody comes across anything interesting and would recommend it to your fellow vepors, just post it here for us all to see and enjoy.

I am pretty new to vaping, sorta.

I have vaped for about 2 years now but started of, with what seemed to me, a crappy eGo Twist with a cheap tank.

I recently upgraded to a Mini Provari with a JonBoy Lava Tank and I highly recommend both of these products.

Let's see... I believe most of us agree that we like Kanger Pro Tank 2s but the coils have been iffy lately as far as quality is concerned. The KPT3 (dual coil), is pretty good. We also agree that the first batch of dual coils sucked but after redesign -- they suck less. It's still probably a better bet to use the single coils on them and make them into a KPT2 instead.

We're still recommending Vision Spinners or eGo Twists to our noobs, half of which don't listen and go buy an advanced mod that they can't figure out how to use and then argue with veteran vapers about how it operates and then wind up taking our first suggestion to buy a Vision Spinner or an eGo Twist. These usually go away fairly quickly. Those noobs who do listen and ask intelligent questions and know how to actually spell out words instead of using text speeeeek 2 try 2 meke u c there pnt -- stick around and add to the community. We have a fair number of really great new members now.

Also, we're still trying to impress upon the noobs that there really isn't a "best" out there, just a what's "best" for you. I think they think we're lying to them and not giving up our precious intel about the best tank, the best battery/mod, the best juice, the best American made nicotine, the best throat hit, etc. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Did I leave anything else out, guys and gals? I think I hit the main points.

ETA: Oh! And just so you know, Blu, I've finally got the hang of direct dripping and have brought a few of our new members into the fold. Thanks for all your help when I was just starting. Now, I'm working on building my own coils.

Boba's isn't really a dark colored juice. As a matter of fact, I have trouble telling the difference between it and my cinnamon. Some juices are dark just by the nature of the flavoring in them. Also, I think another good indicator is if when you get it, it's fairly light colored, and the darker color only comes into play after it's steeped for a bit.

I agree with everyone, Tam's advice should not be questioned!

Good news on the liquid front, I found a shop near me that makes liquids. They have 120 flavors and make them in house. Already got some and Strawberry Banana is good!

While I love the mojito flavor from a local B&M, the owner/mixer uses food coloring in his juices so I have him custom make mine without. If it doesn't need to be there I'd rather not have it.
