Big Rig drivers...

Recommended Posts

When I was about 12 y.o. I got a ride in a big rig. A friend of the family was a driver and had his truck at home. He demonstrated how it started up, unlocking the trailer brakes and then took us out around the neighborhood. We had a big loop in our development about 2 miles long. It was fun and I got to brag to the other neighborhood kids. This was during the whole truck craze thing in the 70's that you all were chatting about.

I did get to drive a one of those local hauling trucks a couple times. We used it to move merchandise from a warehouse to the University during football games. It was an experience trying to navigate a large truck around drunk students and packed parking lots.

My dad had a CB installed in our van when I was growing up. It was fun on long trips to listen to the chatter. I did talk to a few truckers and a group of people traveling to a Corvette convention while we were out traveling ourselves.

I have to agree with Tam, everyone should spend a some time in a large truck. I also want to add motorcycles to that list. Having done both has made me a better driver.

I do have a question?! I understand the policies about having passengers, it makes sense. But can you take a dog/pet with you? I can see where having a dog might be a problem with potty breaks etc, but I thought it would make a great companion and a little added security. Do you have concerns about security on the road? Do you carry or have some type personal protection? I know laws vary from state to state and this could be an issue while traveling.

My husband has his class A CDL with tanker/hazmat.

He's currently driving a oil delivery truck. Pulled up next to a house on fire, cop told him "GET THE HELL OFF OF THIS STREET WITH YOUR BOMB."

Literally.

Then a few weeks ago, he got the truck stuck off the side of a long driveway that the homeowner didn't clear of ice (no salt, no nothing. WTH? Homeowners piss me off). Followed by the tow truck getting into the same situation.

He also used to be a tow truck driver and has seen so many accidents he is thinking about joining the FD because nasty MVC scenes don't bother him anymore.

The company I drive for has a "No Pet Policy", thats why I train noobs! Lol

I won't comment as far as the protection policy goes other than to say that there is NO Federal restrictions on Concealed Carry. Just have to abide by state to state laws.

As a 4 wheeler that's been in a service base job for 12+ yrs on the roads with you rigs I can say this... I've learned what the rigs need, and want from us. Also that most rigs do the best they can to give way so to speek to the lil guys. As a four wheeler, we need to be able to anticipate the needs of the big boys, it's not hard to do. I'm a firm believer that it's not the job of the rigs to avoid us, but OUR job to make it work for us to get where we need to safely together! Also, if the rigs can stop sparying water on my windshield when I pass that would be great.... LMAO

Fishguy, I know that was a little levity there, but that brings up another important point. Thanks

If its raining hard enough to use your windshield wipers, turn your headlights on. Our tires kick up a lot of spray from the road and we may not see a smaller vehicle coming up on our sides if you don't have your lights on.

Hey, I'm the first guy to support headlights on in bad weather! Even questionable weather, rain.. snow... dusk.. dawn... not matter. Turn your damn lights on if they don't come on automaticly, and if the do auto on and it seems questionable, turn em on manually for sure. That's a top 5 pet peave of mine on the road for sure!!!

Always gets a WTF from me!

sound like I run with my lights on at all time no matter what its like out. One thing that stuck from 6 years of service. Be surprised at how many times it has saved me. Visual alert is safety
