DAYVAPE reacted to Uma in Discretion
I agree, that discretion is important. But making Vapers hide or feel like junkies is total hogwash. Smokers have a right to see the alternatives to smoking T-cigs, Children also are the biggest spokesmen ever for getting their parents and peers off T-cigs and when they notice a E-cig, they immediately ask questions in hopes of helping their loved ones to switch over too. Children are smarter than grown-ups apparently, because they know that reducing or omitting the TAR and TOXINS and CRAP from T-cigs has GOT to be 99% healthier.

But then, if the E-cigs are forever hidden from view, and nobody knows there is an alternative, then big pharma can't push their Chill Pills when somebody needs a calming dose of nicotine.
If Big Pharma goes broke, so do the many organizations that were formed to get us to quit "smoking T-cigs.

Even so, discretion should be advised no matter if we're vaping an e-cig or mixing a drink. Just don't make us HIDE like Criminals.

Thanks DayVape! I hope it is helpful to newbies. Hopefully Jdog will pop in and offer some tips too. She has a genuine Mini DID up and running better than mine!

I so completely agree about the OHM meter. Without it, one will get HARD SHORTS and possibly ruin the mod. or at the least, go through a truck load of mod springs. It's not worth it. Besides, the OHM meter can be used to check off the store bought attys and cartos too. Even those can cause hard shorts if there's a short in them. The Genesis is just the easiest one ever for fixing those shorts so that they're usable instead of tossed. I've tossed too many attys and cartos in the last few years. Sucks. But, I've never had to toss my Genesis! (genuine DID's).

It's impossible to always achieve the same exact thickness of rolled mesh. And when we change from, say, 325 to 400 size mesh or even to 500, we again have a brand new ball game. There is no EXACT ohm reading from numbers. We HAVE to have an OHM Meter reader. Thanks for pointing that out, DayVape!!

Talk about informative! Excellent write up Uma !!
And an Ohm meter is a must have... you shouldn't be setting these up by simply eye-balling the coil.

Don't give up yet. It's worth it once you get past the learning curves. EXTREMELY worth it with a genuine genesis, to be honest, but at least worth the while with the clones.

Every wick is different. In order to "know" for a fact the ohm, you need an OHM meter of some kind. The one I linked you to, or the provari is good.

The first pic shows good even hot coils. Give yourself a pat for that.

I'll try to outline some steps for you to check and cross off:

    1. torch the wick, either with a torch or over the gas stove top. Try to keep it in the blue flame. The blue flame isn't as hot as the orange flame, which is good, because you don't want to make the mesh brittle. Too hot of a flame will brittle it. Hold it in one place until it turns bright orange, then move to the next spot. Repeat until the entire surface and edges of both sides have been oranged at least once, preferrably twice.
    2. Fold over the far edge a little bit, crease it tight.
    3. Straighten out a medium sized paper clip, or take a fat needle, and set it on the near edge, and roll the paper clip towards the folded far edge.
    4. Check for fit in the hole. Make tighter or looser as needed. It should go in snug, but not tight. Just a little bit of friction. Some vapers prefer loose, to where there is an air between the rolled wick and the mesh.
    5. Take nail clippers or scissors and cut the tank's end of the wick at a 45% angle. This allows the juice to enter easier.
    6. Torch the wick again, paying extra attention to the newly cut end. You don't want any frayed edges touching any part of the atty/tank/ top cap, etc.
    7. OPTIONAL step, and one that I do religously: Torch the rolled wick, then while hot, dunk it into cold water (preferably distilled water). Repeat 2 more times. This will stiffen the wick. (nice if you live on bumpy roads or have a thin wick).
    8. OPTIONAL step, and another that I do all the time: Wet the wick with VG or whatever you have on hand. Light it on fire with your match or bic lighter. Let the fire die out naturally. Repeat this 2x's. It's called "seasoning the wick"
    9. Cut your wire, and anneal it. Anneal means to heat it with your bic lighter all along it's width. Pinch the hot wire between your fingers and run your fingers along it's length. This smooths out the kinks, plus makes it easier to work with because it also makes the wire less springy.
    10. Wrap your coil to your wick. There are many different ways to do it. The main rule on it, is that you want to wrap the coil snug, but never tight and never loose. You want perfect tension, and you will achieve that with practice. Perfect means you can lightly twist and lift the wick out and reinsert easily. You will remove the wick from time to time in order to dry burn your coils.
    A. Leaving tails for the negative screw and for the center post, wrap your wire around your wick at least 4 times. (many like to do 5/4). Set your wrapped wick into the hole, place the bottom tail under the negative screw and tighten the screw down. Now wrap the other tail and wrap it around the center post and tighten down the nut. Make sure there is not too much room between the center post and the wick. Think Captain Hook and pinch any spacey wire. TAKE OUT THAT PAPER CLIP now. LIFT the wick off the bottom of the tank. You don't want it to touch anything metal at any time.
    B. Look at the wires. The negative wire should be extremely close to the base, but NOT touching the base. The wires on the coil should be as equally spaced as possible. Make sure the wick isn't touching the center post. Make sure there is no highwire act going on between the center post and wick.
    C. With an OHM meter, check the ohm. If it's steady, you're good to go. If it says 0 there's a hard short. If it bounces around there's a minor short. Turn off the OHM meter, and with a toothpick or something, play with the coils until they all glow evenly and pretty much simutaneously. If one glows hotter than another, it's usually the coil beneath that one that needs scooting a bit. If the top coil is hot, tighten the nut, or kink a hook, or rewrap that part. Also, Sometimes, we just need to twist and lift the wick a bit to fix all shorts. Sometimes there's a frayed edge or something. Don't despair. You'll eventually figure it out.
    D. Set it on a mod that has a dull battery. Pulsate the coils. Pulsating will heal most minor shorts, oxidize the wick more, and be safer for your mod as well. Once all coils are glowing nicely, then REWET the wick, and fire it up, and check for spurts and sputters. You're aiming for a nice steady stream of white vapor into the heavens. A few sputters, spits are okay, but if it goes wild on you, you need to scoot some coils or oxidize your mesh more.
    E. TRIM the top of the wick so that it is level with or below the center post height. Fill up the tank, rewet your wick, and you're good go.

Once you've achieved a great setup, you'll see it gets easier and easier and faster and faster to achieve. The good news is, the Wick will last you months and months, and the coil will last for a good 6 weeks or more too. Whenever it starts to lose pizazz, just take off a coil. The more seasoned and oxidized the wick gets, the less coils we can get away with. (LR)
The fresher the battery, the hotter the vape too, so keep that in mind whenever lowering your resistance.

I know this looks like a lot, and probably looks overwhelming, but just take one step at a time, check it off your to do list, and by the end of day you'll realize that it wasn't that much at all. Good luck.

Both wires do not go to the center post... that would mean you have them both on the positive terminal.
The bottom end of the wire goes under one screw.. and the top end goes to the center post.
Also, you need to use these on a device that checks the resistance of the coil or you have no idea what voltage to vape at. They are said to be 'advanced user devices' for a reason... you must have knowledge of how to properly use them.

This is not meant to bash you... I'm simply saying that you need to know what you are doing to set it up properly.

I'm sorry... but I think these types of e-cigs are simply ridiculous ! I don't want to have to hook it up to my computer to make it work, etc. What is the point really of needing to save your 'vaping profile amplitude', etc. anyway? Just seems like a lot of unnecessary/useless crap to me... just my opinion of course. I'm sure it may appeal to the geeky computer type of folks though.

DAYVAPE reacted to Ricketts in Veteran Smokers
As a newbie, I become quickly mired in the continuum of accessories, tastes and flavors advocated by E-Cig users when all I'm searching for are simple, personal opinions, preferably from older, veteran smokers. Primarily, other than menthol, I can't grasp the captivation for strawberry, chocolate, banana, and myriad other flavors. Are we talking cigarette smokers opting for a healthier choice or, are we competing with Baskin & Robbins? I drink Scotch but not with chocolate syrup. I've been smoking longer than most of you have been alive, perfectly satisfied with the flavor of tobacco.

Anatomy of a Veteran Smoker: In about a month, I hope to celebrate my 79th birthday. Among my memorabilia, I have an engraved Ronson cigarette lighter given to me by my parents as a graduation gift. That is, my 8th grade graduation. Yes, an avowed smoker for some 70 years.

Physical Condition: Small frame, 5'8”, 145 pounds. Suffered pneumonia at age 14, once again at age 36, but have not had a cold or influenza in over 40 years. Other than a topical cream for mild plaque psoriasis, I use absolutely no drugs/meds, and my doc claims he knows of no other senior my age who is med-free. Annual physicals have been consistently excellent. I'm food-apathetic, caring less about what it is, how it's prepared, and consider eating a waste of time. My love is chocolate -in any form and lots of it. Until two years ago, I abhorred and avoided anything remotely resembling exercise. Then, for some odd reason, I bought a WalMart $89.00 bicycle and have religiously ridden it for 5-8 miles every other day. In a nutshell, I've been blessed with remarkable health.

Profile: Never been a heavy smoker, averaging some 25 cigarettes a day. I'm a neat smoker, not smoking in homes or cars. Other than a few vague attempts at quitting, cigarettes have been a welcome and integral part of my life, by far, my very best friends, standing by and with me through any and all of life's ups and downs. Five years ago, in a dedicated effort to stop, the wife and I sought the services of a hypnotist. After the session, the wife hasn't touched a cigarette since, sensitive to even the smell. Me? I couldn't wait to get outside and light up. Quitting is simple if one wants to quit; knowing that one should doesn't cut it -she wanted to quit; I didn't. There was, however, an uptick to her cessation. I decided to cut down, and have held my fags to about 10 a day for this five years. No, it wasn't an economy move, my cigarettes are imported at $2.00 per pack, but my last physical indicated emerging signs of COPD. No surprise. After all, despite light smoking and drastically cutting back, so many long years have pushed the old lungs to the limit, and no amount of cutting back -even quitting entirely- can reverse the damage. But, just maybe, I can hold the beast at bay a little longer with E-Cigs.

Before jumping in, I tediously researched the effects of tobacco, nicotine and it's effective agents -Nitrosamines, acetylcholine, norepinephrine, vasopressin, histamine, serotonin, dopamine, autocrine, beta-endorphin, and all the other ill-sounding particles. Rewarding information.

Personal conclusion: E-Cigs are a viable and much healthier substitute for cigarettes. I began my adventure on 9/21/12, using 24 mg disposable cartridges, now trying 16mg cartridges, and smoking but 1-2 cigarettes a day which I hope to soon eliminate. Surprisingly, it hasn't been anywhere near as stressful as I anticipated. For those having real difficulty, pay heed to previous comments: Hang in there, it gets better each day.

A word of caution: For those who fear upcoming FDA reports, take their “expert” opinions with a grain of salt. The FDA is a puppet, at best a joke, fraught with fallacies and untruths spurned by government control. Want proof? Every day, 3000 young people become regular smokers, 6000 teens under 18 smoke their first cigarette, and more than 1000 adults die prematurely as a result of an adolescent decision. Clearly, a problem to be addressed. Remember the November 1998 multi-state tobacco settlement, estimated at $246 billion over the first 25 years, that was to attack the enormous public health problems posed by tobacco use in the U.S.? And how's that working for us? Well, as of November 30, 2011, states have cut funding for tobacco prevention and cessation programs to the lowest level since 1999, the very first year they received settlement funds. Fiscal Year 2012 will collect $25.6 billion in revenue from the tobacco settlement and tobacco taxes, but will spend only 1.8 % of it ($456.7 million), less than two cents of every dollar in tobacco revenue to fight tobacco use. No complaints from the FDA! Uncle Sam has absolutely no interest in your health or well being, only in your money. So, E-Cig fans can look forward to being taxed and regulated to death but don't give up the ship. Fight it.

    Will,
This unit has a 2.5 amp limit. The Provari has a 3.5. there is no comparison. Running 6 volts with a 1.5 atty gives you 4 amps and 24 watts. This unit cannot handle the load. It mostly likely is stepping down the voltage to work and you really arent vaping at 6 volts. Checking ohms on an atty/carto is important. Sometimes you dont always get what you order and also the ohms of an atty/carto change throughout its lifespan.

"Now the next thing I would be looking for would be to increase the watts instead of just the voltage"
There is no such thing as adjustable wattage. The wattage is a result of the volts & ohms. You can only adjust the volts and use a different ohm atty to vary the watts.

so, I guess if you look at the original definition of a 'Mod'......never mind....its making my head hurt. By the original definition, everything I own is a 'Mod'.....

Oh, and I also use one of these to keep juice from spitting back in my mouth. http://www.empiremod..._p/chrryuni.htm They work like a champ... and by using all of the above items with your eGo battery... you can drip more than just a couple of drops at a time. (I drip 8 drops at a time with this setup.) This will greatly extend the life of your atty by keeping it nice and wet at all times... and provide outstanding flavor, etc. ! These atomizers easily last me for a few months, and then some, with no maintenance whatsoever.

This is simply what works for me and all of my devices... and it works great all of the time.

And, yes, you do have to do a lot of 'topping off' when it comes to cartos... that's just how it is with them. You might want to try the eGo Mega Dual Coil Cartos as well... that is if you have a eGo or the correct eGo/510 adapter. Or, you could skip all that and try out one of the 500 different 'carto tanks' that is out there.

Sorry, but I simply must respond to this specific statement. A couple of weeks back I was getting tired of everyone praising that 'Vision eGo Top Coil Cartomizer' thingy... so I went ahead and ordered myself 5 of them... oh, and a couple of the LR version ones. I just had to see what all the hype was about! Could it be? Could we possibly have something that everyone simply must have when they vape? I don't know... but I was certainly excited to give these bad boys a shot! So, they finally arrived about 3 days or so ago and I immediately started filling a couple of them up to give em a go! Well... let me just say this: I have not been this unhappy about something 'vape related' since I first started over 2 years ago! I have now filled 4 out of the 5 standard ones to see if it was possibly just a bad piece. Nope! They ALL suck major !! I mean... talk about major reduction in quality of flavor coming from those things! I didn't have a single juice make me a 'happy vaper' yet... and I'm honestly trying to give them a fair shot to 'break-in' if they honestly really need to do so for 3+ days now. Not only is the flavor terribly weak... a couple of them even give off a nasty taste. One thing I can say for certain however... is that they are all just like the next one... very consistent I guess you could say. Unfortunately, they are all consistently poor/weak to say the least. I truly did have high hopes for these little things... I was seriously going to be super happy if they were all that everyone was making them out to be! I should have just reminded myself of what I said when I tried CE2's when they first came out: I have NEVER liked 'top coil' type carto designs... every single time I tried them I got the same CRAPPY outcome... Horrible / weak flavor !

No thank you 'Vision eGo Stardust Thingy' that everyone is raving about!!
(Unless they improve them somehow along the lines and I don't have to worry that there will be NO FLAVOR !)

I think I will stick to what works for me: 'Direct Dripping' and/or 'Carto Tanks' !
