Its a psuedo-intellectual way to tack on a negative connotation. Its easy to do behind the comfort of a keyboard. Just interacting with a lot of the people here on VT, I'm enthused about what I see as far as diversity of occupation, lifestyle, and thought! We're only nerds to people like her because we've taken the time to educate ourselves on a "healthier" alternative. The biggest difference between us and people like her, is that, we've taught ourselves HOW to think, and she's only ever been taught WHAT to think.
