Foofightervapegirl reacted to hastinessexuberant in I got this email from Uwell about Ceramic Coils, what do you guys think?
    Hey guys,
So the other day I got this email from Uwell about Ceramic coils. What do you guys think?
The Truth and Science behind Ceramic  Coils
Customers have asked why Uwell doesn’t makes ceramic coils since the ceramic coil has a longer life compared with the Crown 2 coil and some ceramic coils even have better taste.
The article followed contains some researches and analysis of how ceramic coils affect vapers’ health and it may help to answer the question.
Uwell realizes the short life of the Crown 2 coil and we are developing coils to taste better and last longer. The latest version has increased life time and is now on the market. The good news is that there is positive response.
Figure 1 shows three kinds of ceramic coils on the market (#1, #2, and #3 stands for three different brands, respectively).
For #1, there is a layer of cotton between the ceramic and the coil. This design is lower in strength and makes the ceramic fragile. For example, the ceramic coil breaks apart when pinched and tiny powders fall off and stick onto the cotton. It is also hard to distinguish the cotton and the ceramic material since they are both white. In the case of #2 and #3, the ceramic material and the coil are heated up together to be made into one piece. However, the melting point of the coil is lower than the ceramic material so this causes the surface of the coil to be loose and porous. This makes the coil have low durability, is fragile, and has powders falling off.

Figure 2 shows partial end surface microstructure of #1, #2, and #3.
All three ceramic coils appear translucent with a glasslike exterior. Visible light can be reflected and scattered by pores inside the ceramic material. This is what makes it a translucent surface. The ceramic coil is made from silica similar to glass. Therefore, the ceramic coil appears as a glasslike surface. Many impurities can be seen at a magnification of 100X from a microscope and they appear as black spots. The glasslike particles are not uniform and appear to be uneven and chaotic. The tiny glass pieces have sharp surfaces that can scratch the trachea and alveoli when used. The black spots could also be unrefined toxic material that could have impurities.

Figure 3 shows partial cross section surface microstructure of #1, #2 and #3.
After breaking the material for the cross section, we can see glasslike particles with sharp surfaces. The glasslike particles are clearly visible at the magnification of 100X.

Figure 4 shows partial edge surface microstructure of #1, #2, and #3.
Some parts have defects and some parts have sharp edges. This comes from two steps in making the ceramic coil. In the first step, the friction causes defects and coarse edges when samples are removed from the mold. In the second step, the surface of the ceramic coil is loose from the friction between the ceramic powders and the mold. The loose powders cannot be heated up and molded onto a dense body. The ceramic powders also stick to the surface of the ceramic coil. This process also makes the ceramic powders fall off easily.

Figure 5 shows ceramic powders falling off microstructure #1, #2, and #3.
When the ceramic powder is touched, the powder sticks onto that surface. All these powders are glasslike pieces with sharp edges mentioned above in the optical microscope. The size of the ceramic powder is distributed between 30120 micrometers which is too tiny to be seen by the human eye.

Figure 6 shows the microscope image on the contact segment between ceramic and coil.
Number #1 does not compare with others since its coil does not come in contact with the ceramic material. Many ceramic powders gather at the position near coil. The first reason is that the coil cannot be easily compressed into a ceramic material when the ceramic material is molded. This is because the cross section of the coil is circular. The second reason is that powders are produced after taking the coil off of the mold. It is impossible to clean the powders stuck to the inner surface of the ceramic coil. There are ceramic powders on the inside of all ceramic coils on the market.

Finally, ceramic coils may cause death. Making the ceramic material
The ceramic coil is made from inorganic porous ceramic material. There are tiny pores inside the ceramic material that cannot be seen. Pores play an important role in wicking. In order to produce a porous ceramic material, raw materials such as silica powders and poreforming materials like starch or other organic polymers are needed. Then they are mixed and put into a mold with high pressure. Samples are obtained with a fixed shape. The samples are put into a furnace and set to a high temperature. Pores are formed while the poreforming agent combusts and escapes. This kind of pore plays an important role by introducing eliquid into your vape. However, to make enough pores, the temperature to stick the materials together is lower which causes low tensile and compressive strength. The powders fall off or crack when the ceramic coil is touched or shaken. All the powders can be introduced into the lung by air which is dangerous (the speed of air can reach 223mph when we are vaping).
    Vaping
Ceramic coils will absorb more eliquid. Eliquid is vaporized and evaporated when the coil is working. High pressure from the vapor will expand and damage the structure of the porous ceramic material. Loose powders will fall off and go into the lung.
    Causing death
Silicosis is a form of occupational lung disease caused by inhalation of crystalline silica dust. Symptoms are inflammation and scarring in the form of nodular lesions in the upper lobes of the lungs. This is a type of pneumoconiosis. Silicosis can be complicated by the development of severe scarring, where small nodules gradually merge together, reaching a size of 1cm or greater. Progressive massive fibrosis is associated with more severe symptoms and respiratory impairment. Silicosis can also be complicated by other lung diseases such tuberculosis, nontuberculous mycobacterial infection, and fungal infection, certain autoimmune diseases, and lung cancer ("Silicosis." Wikipedia. Wikimedia Foundation, n.d. Web.
    29  Sept.  2016.)(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicosis).

In conclusion, ceramic coils are not healthy. First, a ceramic coil is made from silica similar to glass. Second, ceramic powders or glasslike pieces easily fall off. Finally, silica powders may cause death.
Uwell is working hard to develop a better ceramic coil. However, it is impossible to continue with current technology. Therefore, Uwell will put making a ceramic coil on hold.
Uwell wants to tell customers the truth. Uwell will never produce a product that causes death. Would you buy a coil that lasts longer at the cost of your life?

It's not exactly VAPE mail, but with three output ports, this will be helpful for my mod and my cell phone, I just got a 10,000 mah external battery charger (the thing is a monster).  So if I take enough cords with me when I go to my mom's when my SO and son are working on the brush pile over there, I don't have to worry about running out of power for my mod, my phone, or my tablet, lol.  It ouputs 1000 mah from each ouput port, but the thing is MONSTROUSLY large.  Sort of like a brick.  The goal was one for my phone, but my SO went overboard on Amazon.  Maybe he wanted to donate that much more money to the National MS Association through Amazon Smile, lol.
Speaking of which, @Christopher, it would mean the world to me if you would carry the .25 ohm Uwell Crown 2 coils - right now you only carry the .5.  I've experienced better flavor, and the reviews I've read, with the .25 coils than with the .5 coils.  When you get them, you get one of each, and I liked the .25's so much that my next order for coils was .25.  Plus, the good flavor lasts longer with the .25's, rather than the steep drop off you get with the .5's, obviously from another site where I paid more for them.  And I can't remember if you were out of Herekles + SS or if you don't carry them.  Okay, that's my request for the day

Hey Kelson, nothing worse than the frustration of trying to vape while it's leaking everywhere! I had this issue with my aerotank at one point in time and was baffled as it was generally considered a good device. (I like to rotate my tanks) Anyway turns out when I replaced my glass, the tiny O ring had fallen off. It was so well hidden in the crack between the glass and metal base you wouldn't notice. I found it, put it back in and all was good.
Are all the rubber o rings in place? (Usually the main reason for leaking)

I have 2 Subvods, and haven't had a leaking problem with either one, even after sitting for a couple of days full of juice. Chis is probably right about the o-rings being missing. sometimes a extra o-ring gets stuck on the coil, and causes leaking.

Mine still is not leaking, but everytime I put it down, the airflow gets closed.I am a pretty heavy vaper,so it's kind of annoying, but being forced to vape outside helps because when I put my mod back on the counter 9 times out of 10 I remember my rule of thumb is when you're done hitting it,close that airflow.by the way the .5 coils suck.they have wicking issues big time, even in tc mode.I had to stab a small hole in each part where the cotton goes with a pin.and even after that they last three days max. I am not running them above 45 watts on my worst day.their reccomended wattage is 50-80 I believe. You would think running it lower would make it last longer....nope!so vape at the wattage you want because they won't last anyway.I ordered the .8 kanthal,we will see.

Well, mine arrived today, lightning fast from the vaportalk store.I have to brag on them, top notch service, great prices and good secure packaging.i put in the .25 ohm coil it came with,i was a bad girl and didn't soak it.ran it up to 80 watts and burnt it out!I am now using the .5 coil it came with.loving it!cranked it up to 60 gradually, then lowered it to 42.5  with partial airflow, after further tinkering I am now at 35.2 full airflow.this is the best tank/coil combination I have ever used.top notch flavor,it's very sturdy!haven't taken it for a spin in tc mode yet,but I will when I break out my mocha juice.one thing to remember....close your airflow all the way when not in use, to prevent leaking!the vapor production is also top notch to any other tank I have used. Will definently be picking up a few more!

I am vaping on the .5 I had a suspicion about the leakage, and it proved right.you have to keep the airflow fully closed when not in use.plus because of the airholes in the bottom of the coil,it floods.I took mine out and found a decent amount of juice.a q tip will do the job nicely.I would reccomend cleaning it everytime you clean or fill your tank.yes it is a pain in the butt.but mine started dripping a bit,so I investagated.it says in the user manual to keep the airflow closed when not in use to prevent leaking.the other I just suspected.I haven't had a problem since, and I vape about every hour,I have been up since 5 ,so that's five hours of no leak.hope this helped, and happy vaping!

My husband had a delrin drip tip that he gave me.  We were supposed to go out this weekend to look at more, but didn't have time, and this one suits me just fine - it's narrower, and longer than the other delrin drip tip I have, so it feels more natural, and it's easier for me to keep the inside of my upper lip off it without tipping it to an angle that would cause the tank to leak, lol.

If it's coil based they do "max" out at a certain point but what exactly is dependant on the device/coil/other aspects. What wattage are you running them out? So for example let's take my setup at the moment. I'm using an iStick 40w with a Nautilus Tank and 1.8 ohm coils. There are a couple of things I have to do to keep my coils long lasting (in my experience)
The Nautilus coils have some large holes at the bottom. Though I may still have say 1ml of eliquid left in my tank, I need to fill it at this point because otherwise the coil can't pull in enough liquid. This causes it to run dry. And while it might not "burn out" it will taste horrible. Basically the coil becomes useless. This is the same for any tank, keep it filled as often as possible. Running low on e liquid is never a good thing. I'm not sure off hand with the crown coils/tank but each tank has a similar happy level.
Wattage - I run my device around 9 watts in the morning and 10 +- in the evening. I could crank it up to 40watts but the coils would completely die on me. Basically, at least for me, I noticed these coils don't run well above 11 watts max. It starts tasting burnt so I know that's the limit. Your coils will have a similar limit, start low and move up slowly until you find the max wattage they can handle (There is probably a mathematical equation for this but, cranking up slowly works the same) If you're running them above spec they're going to die out. But, if you find that sweet spot (for me again it's around 10 watts) a single coil will normally last me a solid week. I can easily go longer (2 weeks no problem) but I find the coil just doesn't perform as well and gets a bit "stiff" over time. It's not that I have to toss it, I just prefer to change them out every 7-10 days +-.

Edit: oh by the way, 0.5 ohms should be run around 20-40 tops. (Again find that sweet spot for your particular coil)
