Three days in and loving it.

Hey all, name's Liz.

Not a seasoned smoker (increased from social smoking to daily smoking only about a year ago), but was up to about 6-10 cigs a day. I'd wake up and go to bed with that tightness in my chest, found I was short on breath more, and missed my sense of taste and smell.

I did some research earlier on vaping, but was intimidated by the options and unsure on what I really wanted.

This past Sunday, a friend of mine mentioned in passing that she switched to vaping earlier this year after years of smoking. I hadn't known anyone prior to this who vaped, and she kindly answered my bazillion questions.

Monday I drove to the nearest vapor shop and was taken care of beautifully. The employee walked me through everything, didn't pressure me, and took time to understand what I was looking for and offer suggestions.

I walked out with an evod 650mAh PT battery, an evod 2 tank (switched out the coil it came with for a wickless one), and a nice little sampler pack of 70/30 juices, 12mg. The whole thing cost me about $45 (including a 10% discount, since I work at a university) which I thought was pretty fair, considering it'd pay for itself within a couple weeks.

I know it's only been a couple days, but so far, I'm not craving cigs one bit (which is saying something). I love being able to puff away while I'm playing League (yeah, bit of a nerd here).

I'm still a bit shy when it comes to vaping in public. It's catching on in my area (west Michigan) slowly, but I don't see it very often. A number of vapor shops have opened up in my city, though, so it must be catching on. :)

Looking forward to learning from you seasoned vapers and ditching cigarettes for good!

Welcome to VT! Good set up to start vaping, simple and easy to use. Evods are what I started with. You will be amazed how much better you feel in just a short time. I was a 30+ year smoker and after a month of vaping, what a difference!

There are many experienced vapers here who can answer any questions you might have along the way!

Welcome congrats on giving up the analogs. Looks like a good setup and all the better if it fits your needs. It's nice to have a local shop you can count on for a little help now and again. I did the same thing and found 3 great shops near me. They all make their own line of juice and prices are good. When I first started I fell off the wagon a couple of times the first week. I didn't go out buy a pack and smoke them all, just had a few left and had two that week. I'm coming up on 10 weeks with no desire to turn back and dropped my nic level last week which is working good too. I used to keep my setup concealed walking around at first but now I keep it in my hand everywhere I go incase some places are vape friendly. I do limit use in public to outdoors only some people get pissy about things they don't understand and I don't have time to educate someone who's not willing to listen. Anyway have fun ask when you don't know and enjoy not being chained to analogs.

Welcome to VT! I really hope this works out for you. for a lot of us here its become more of a hobby than a cessation tool at this poiint! Dont be afraid to vape in public at the same kind of areas you would smoke. for indoors I personally ask before anything since I dont want anyone to freak out, basically try to avoid conflict. Vaping still has a negative conotation to it since a lot of people associate it to smoking which is fair but people are far too uneducated. Until we are free to vape wherever we want stay classy and Im sure you wont have any problems, you seem super polite!

Have fun & dont be shy to ask about anything!

Welcome Liz!

I am like you. I really don't vape in public much. I tend to keep it in the car, at home, and in the office. I really did about the same when I smoked.

It is gaining acceptance in a lot of areas, but there is so many misconceptions and I normally don't want to deal with them in public. (I am shy and non-confrontational, a weird combination for a salesman!)

I sat next to a woman today in a nonsmoking Denny's in Abilene, TX and she was vaping away. What really caught my eye is that she was an older lady and no one even gave her a second look. (I mean no offense by calling her older, she was older than me, and I know better than to try to guess the age of a woman)

Thanks for all the warm welcomes, everyone. I appreciate it.

I work for a university here, and they recently decided to ban e-cigs inside all the university buildings, with the same penalties as smoking analogs inside. There was an op-ed in the student newspaper this week written by a student questioning the administration's decision. In case anyone's curious, here's a link: http://www.lanthorn.com/article/2014/08/oped-luke-colmn

So anyway, I'm a touch nervous to vape, even in the single-stall bathroom. It's a new building, and if I set off the smoke alarms somehow...yeah. Don't want that.
Ah well. Just not looking forward to another Michigan winter spent puffing 25 feet away from the building and knee-deep in snow...brr.

I'm really interested to see where vaping goes from a social standpoint. The article's author writes, "In terms of bringing them into the ranks of hipsterdom, I think their success is indisputable." So hey, that's something. I was probably considered a "hipster" back in college--not the way the term hipsters are known today--but I liked trying new things out. Not everything would catch on, though, so my concern is that vaping might be labeled as "too hipster" on campuses.

Anyway, my thoughts are probably better suited for a different forum, but just thought I'd share.

Smoke alarms typically won't go off unless you blow the vapor directly at it. Try taking a short puff, hold your breath for around 10 seconds and see what comes out. It's not much. When I have to stealth vape, that's what I do. If I hold my breath for a little longer, no vapor comes out at all. As for the scent, I'm going to be asking a friend of mine to mix up a batch of 12 mg juice with just a touch of sweet but no flavor to see if that will work. :)

If smoke alarms went off I would have been thrown off a BUNCH of flights by now lol.

Smoke alarms can go off if you blow the vapor directly at them. Also, if there's enough vapor in the air, it will set off the alarms. At the large vape meet in Denver awhile back, everyone was vaping and we set off the smoke alarms so often that the hotel threatened to throw us out, but that's more of the extreme. :)

I haven't had any problems with smoke alarms either

I have vaped in about every kind of establishments bathroom you can imagine from airplanes and airports to 3 miles down in a cave. Outside restaurants in about a year and a half I have never been told I couldn't vape anywhere but do not do it everywhere public because of my not wanting to perpetuate a negative stereotype. Even though I vape 18mg all day every day I keep some 24mg on hand for those stealth vaping occasions where it wouldn't be easy to do.

Some smoke detectors operate off a photocell, not just chemical. Those are the ones vaping will trigger. As far as I know, chemically, vaping won't trigger a smoke alarm. And I've never set one off. But I know in California, a nanny state for sure, there have been sweeping changes in smoke alarm manufactire and laws. It's insane now. Super detectors have arrived and I'm sure they will become a bigger problem for vapers in the future.....

Stuff like that will always be easy to get around. Even in my PG free liquid I use if I exhale immediately there is a cloud of vapor but if I hold it in about 8-10 seconds there is almost none. Combine that with no onerous odor and it makes it very difficult to detect.

I guess it would depend on how sensitive the smoke alarm is set and how dense the vapor is. When I had my B&M open I bought a smoke alarm to show that it would not set it off. I had people asking if the vapor would set off smoke alarms. Mind you these were the cigalike type I was selling at the time. ;) Not once did I set it off. I'll have to retry this now with some of the more modern setups that are available today.

I tried and tried at the MGM in Detroit last week to set the one off in my room after being told it was "ok to vape anywhere on or in the property" but smoking was confined to the casino only. I never could get it to go off.

My good laugh of the day. Thank you I needed that.
