Is it necessary to add a protective cover to the pod

I saw less on the purchase site pod system has a cover protection. I want to know whether long time use will make the pod and the mouth contact part wear or become dirty

If the mouth piece comes off, I'd wash it every now and then to keep it clean. If the mouth piece doesn't come off, just wipe it with a moist cloth.
