I'm not an engineer, nor an expert on batteries and atomizers, but here is my theory:

The e-cig is essentially three parts: battery, atomizer and cartridge. While different makes may use the same atomizer, that is 1/3 of the story. The cartridge is not going to be much of a factor, other than the wicking quality of the fill. If the user direct drips, it's not going to matter at all. That leaves the battery. At the same voltage, there will still be performance differences. Not all batteries of the same voltage maintain a consistent flow of power throughout the duration of the charge. For instance, I noticed immediately that the 510 mega battery seems to perform consistently from start to end of the charge. While the regular battery seems to fall off quite a bit as the charge falls, in terms of vapor production.

My observations on the 510 are purely anecdotal, and may be my own perception. But from other applications, such as flashlights, I know there is a huge difference in performance from brand to brand, even when the same basic characteristics of the battery remains the same.

BigXor really hit the nail on the head here. The one and only reason we decided to carry the VP units in the store was the safety. At the time nobody had really thought about it but us. We knew some day this would happen. Which is why we have never carried any other custom unit.

When Jeso first created the VP units he was one of the first mod creators to use protected batteries. He also designed the units to turn only 1 1/2 threads. So in the event that a user with a death wish decided to either A. Use none protected batteries or B. Mix and match charged and uncharged batteries, there would be room for the gas to go, in this case through the bottom of the unit. Now of course this wasn't advertised because some nut job would give it a try. Just because you have an air bag doesn't mean you should crash your car into a wall.

It would scare the heck out of you but you'd probably be ok. Another issue is the way modders place the atomizer fitting into the unit, most press the fitting into the unit. What does this mean? It means it won't handle much pressure, when a battery heats and expends and finally blows, guess where the pressure goes? You got it, right out the atomizer fitting. In this case it was the BB. While out in New York we pulled out about 40 units and placed them on the table and the first thing was said was, well, these are all pipe bombs just waiting to blow. We couldn't believe nobody anticipated this issue. Of course those with the knowledge like Bogxor warned of this but nobody listened.

In the VP units case the fitting is of a threaded design, not pressed into aluminum.

@kato07 - Exploding wouldn't be an issue for the VP passthrough because it's a straight passthrough, there is no battery inside the unit.

So next time you decided to buy a unit because it's the "new" thing, make sure you keep in mind some of the saftey users. Ask the modder "what have you done to make this safe" any good suppliers or modder should give you direct answers about what they've done. We have answerd this question a few times. If they beat around the bush, ditch buying the unit, it's just not worth it.

Ummm. I have to agree with Christopher, it looks a little weird. Too "clunky". The only thing that is super cool about it is that you can load up a 3 ml bottle into the thing and it pumps juice straight to the atty! No more opening it up and dripping, it does it for you! So, hit or miss. People love the thing, but I'm not feeling I need it. That's just my personal opinion.

So my wife made some typically superfine soup this weekend and naturally I looked forward to my lunches this week. Because I'm no power-mad suit carrying a briefcase, nor am I some sneaker-wearing parent with a ballistic nylon lunch kit, I carry my lunch and whatever to work in a plastic grocery bag. Suits my proletariat leanings quite nicely.

This morning I packed my lunch, the bills to mail, the "quick start" guide to my new Droid, some other notes of stuff I needed to do today, and my VP PT & juice in a trusty plastic grocery bag. And headed out the door. Before I backed out of the driveway I hooked the PT into the car's outlet and dripped some juice onto the atty. Dang thing dripped 'juice' all over my slacks! And had a really wet hit. Yuck, I thought, time to clean this atty. But there was sufficient vapor to get me to work. When I set the bag on my desk and started pulling stuff out of it I noticed ... everything was wet! And smelled like soup...

    Rats!

Frantically I got stuff out of there and everything was covered in soup; notes, bills, vitamin jar ... PT. Cold and greasy soup. Sloshing around in the bottom of the bag. A 6 ml bottle of watermelon just below the surface of the little lake in there.

    Sigh.

Okay, long story short I blotted all the paper stuff dry, took my PT to the sink and used damp paper towels to clean it off, stuck the corner of a paper towel into the atty, cried a little, and went back to my desk. I debated a moment to decide whether I wanted to risk a short pluging that thing into the company's computer, but I figured that was better than risking my own.

Hey! It lit up! So I screwed the atty on it, dripped some nice watermelon onto it ... Hey! It worked! Tasted a little bit like wet socks - actually, old wet socks - but it kicked out some vapor so I was heartened. To shorten this some more, the soup-flavored atty has finally come all the way back around. I'm certainly relieved.

so I got my spade today around 3pm.
I charged one battery while I vaped the almost dead one.
The battery charged up, I vaped on the battery while playing fallout 3 for 3 hours straight(medium to heavy hitting)
I can say that it is a truely awsome vape machine. The throught hit will drop though about the last 15 or so minutes on the battery life..that just tells me to change the batteries though : )

This is probably one of the best and most interesting posts I've read so far on the forums. I have to say I agree with not only your concerns but your point of view as well. The bottom line is, nicotine is a vice pure and simple much like alcohol and caffeine. The good lord never intend that we ingest these toxins however in one way or another we have been introcuded to nicotine and over the years have become sadly Dependant. Essentially the electronic cigarette is a pacifier (or a dummy if your in the UK) for adults, it is what we use to help overcome the every day stress called life. I find it to also be a great past time. It's extremely relaxing.

That all aside I can't agree more that safety is our number once concern. It is for many suppliers, at least the good ones anyway. Why do you think Vapor Talk was one of the first liquid suppliers in the United States to add child proof caps? Because there is a very real threat of a child getting a hold of something that looks like apple juice and smells like a grape. Unfortunately there are some real "winner" parents out there and we as suppliers have to protect their children. You said you where concerned that a child may some day get a hold of juice and drink a bottle, guess what, it's already happened. (Yes you heard correct) I won't say where and what supplier was involved because it's not needed but it's happened. As far as we know, the child is fine. Luckily.

Truth be told liquid bottles in loose form will cease to exist should electronic cigarettes stay on the market for the long run. Everyone will end up using cartomizers. 2 piece units. Why? Because it's a way to not only control the nicotine levels, but it's sealed thus preventing the cotton from falling out, which of course could be eaten by a dog, cat or child.

Quality control is another major issue that is being worked on continuously. Is PG safe to vape? Let's be honest with ourselves we are on the front line of this new invention, although PG is general recognized as safe by the FDA and is used in many products such as baby wipes, vitamins etc it's never been tested in long term vapor form inhaled by humans. Granted there was a study done on monkeys for over a year, which concluded positive effects, but we really don't know the VERY long term effects. Essentially only time will tell. The general common sense assumption is, traditional tobacco is so bad that you could probably smoke tea leaves and still be better off than smoking tobacco leaves.

I think overall this product is a real step forward in helping dependent cigarette users leave traditional tobacco. Leaving nicotine however is not the ecigs best trait. The original designer of the electronic cigarette (who was inspired after his father died of lung cancer) wanted people to quite smoking with the ecig, however the units worked SO well that people instead, just replaced the delivery form. He never intended persons to use PG over a long period of time. Right now it's up to the user to have the self control to step down. Lucky this is happening more and more often, in fact ex smokers now known as vapers are starting to become more health conscious than they ever where before.

We are still in the early phases and so long as we can get the support of government agencys and watch groups we can perfect the electronic cigarette into a true NRT. Something it isn't now. Many people on the board state "I don't want to stop vaping" to me that's the nicotine talking. I think if we could make it as easy to quite as it already is to switch delivery, we could really see some massive health improvements in society. Something I one day hope we altogether can witness.

Anyway I'm getting off course here, awesome post and some very valid points.

Hi Soupninja, here's my $0.02. First, I've spent plenty of money (over $400) in the last six weeks, on e-cigs. I'm now putting a lot more thought into my purchases, based on my experiences. I was very interested when the eGo came out. Then I realized that the eGo battery is, basically, a bigger version of a 510 battery. I.E. it is a sealed unit with the switch built in. When it goes, you chuck the whole thing in the battery recycle bin at the store and buy a new one. As of right now, I don't believe any site (Janty or otherwise) has a spare battery listed, or even a mention of what they'll cost. That scares me. You've already learned a very important thing, batteries will die. That's why, for now, I'm sticking with my Spade. The battery housing is very well made, and uses an inexpensive 10440 protected li-ion cell. Christopher sells them for $7, and they're also available at places like Battery Junction where they're on sale now for $4. At that price you could buy a three for the price of a standard 510 batt. I know that the Spade will eventually wear out. But right now, it's my favorite, and I'm thinking of buying another, when my 510 batts start to go. Good luck!

BTW, do keep in mind that, If you decide you have to have an ego, Totally Wicked is releasing their version, in two other colors. They say it'll be available on the 21st. They're calling it the Tornado.

Hi soupninja and welcome, I have both units so I will give you info to help with your decision. First of all I love both for different reasons.

EGO: I'm getting about 12 hours per charge from the batts. Thats excellent. The model is very nice looking and creates a smooth vapor. It is about an inch shorter than the Spade and a very comfortable unit to hold.

SPADE I get 5-6 hours from the batts. Its a very nice looking unit. I do get a nicer throat hit from the Spade as compared to the eGo. To me it feels lighter than the eGo.

A draw back with the eGo is the batteries are proprietary. If they go out you're limited where you can go to get a replacement. I have not seen a price for new ones. The Spade uses a standard 10440 protected batt that you can find at multiple websites. I hope this limited info will help. The easiest solution is to just buy both.

I agree Jeff, WE the consumers must demand that our safety is priority. That's how it all starts. And no, not from the government, we don't need another industry in their back pocket, they're overstuffed as it is. I think the "leadership" that Chris and his team are providing is pioneering the path for us , but I think as a community this is also something that should be demanded of every company that sales e-cigarette anything.

Well I sell and created Dulcis so I know it quite well

Dulcis does have a strong throat hit. It's meant to have a strong throat hit. I think in this case you might just not like the particular flavor. Some say it's smooth some say it's harsh but at the end of the day it's all matter of opinion. What a piece of chocolate tastes like to one person means something to another.

If you'd like I can send you a bottle of 16mg or perhaps some Traditional Tobacco which is similar to the Dulcis but a tad smoother. Let me know!

    Vapor Talk – Dulcis 16mg

This stuff rocks. I bought this because I heard it was the Vapor Talk version of RY4. It is probably one of the best RY4 juices I’ve had. It has a mellow tobacco flavor with a hint of caramel and some other flavors that blend together into a very relaxing and flavorful vape. I’ve been vaping Dulcis for the past three weeks and it has become my everyday vape.

On a scale of 1-10, I’ll give this a 9. It really is very good. If you like RY4, give Dulcis from www.VaporTalkStore.com a try. I think you will be very pleasantly surprised.

    Vapor Talk – Midnight 16mg

I got Midnight from www.VaporTalkStore.com as a sample when I purchased some other juices from them. All I can say is “WOW”. This juice blew my doors off. This has a wonderful strawberry flavor with some other subtle flavoring mixed in. This makes for a very adult flavor which is very soothing to vape and the flavor keeps coming through. Let me also add that the strawberry is not overpowering at all. It is in the foreground, but the other flavors mellow the strawberry into a well balanced and pleasurable vape. The flavor is very much like a sloe gin fizz.

I highly recommend trying this one as I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

    On a scale of 1-10, I give Midnight a 9.

Sounds to me like you are dripping way too much ,too much liquid will keep the element from getting up to temp. .Unscrew the atty and blow through it backwards into a tissue or paper towel to remove excess liquid.2 or 3 drops should get you 6 or 7 puffs .A lot of people are throwing away perfectly good attomizers .You can soak them in alcohol then rinse real good ,I use denture tabs then three or four soaks in hot water from my coffee maker, then let them drain /dry overnight on a paper towel.I am using a Joye 302 attomizer I bought in June and afte r a good cleaning works as good as a new one.

What you are talking is called Dry Burning. To be honest it doesn't really work well in my option. I've tried it on a couple of atomizers and it usually ends up making the vapor very very harsh. Although it does take away that metallic taste that some people complain about it. (Still not worth it to me though, I look a smooth hard throat hit, not a beating)
