In my opinion nic is a significant portion of throat hit.

After that is higher pg levels.

After that its flavorings.  Citrus, mints,some fruits among others tend to produce more throat hit. 

Higher wattages tend to produce more throat hit but over doing it scorches the juice/cotton which gives a sort of unhealthy throat hit

That's about the size of it. You'll find what works best for you and your vape style.

Personally though, anything higher than a 6mg nic when sub-ohm-ing makes me cough up a lung ...But then again I'm a wimp and don't vape above a 3-4mg and 35W-40W with 70vg/30pg or max vg juice ;) I don't like the harsh throat hits.
