DIACETYL CONVO!

Recommended Posts

Ok i was watching Mod Envy last night and this was the main topic. I want to know sooooo much more. I DIY and buy flavors from TFA and Flavor West. Now they say they are Diacetyl free but i know custards and butters and things that give your vape that creamy butter taste have traces. Suicide Bunnys just got into a issue with this, if what i was told was correct. Now lets gets this rolling, everyone needs to know about this. Especially the new vapers who have no clue what this is.

In Fairness I think it should be pointed out that this an old issue and was a much bigger deal something on the order of 2 years ago.

Diacetyl is an ingredient once used in flavorings to mimic butter and cream flavors. Not considered dangerous to ingest in general, it was determined that vaping or inhaling it was not good as evidence shows it to be antipathetic to the lungs. Inflammatory disease causing shortness of breath.

News of this quickly spread thru the vaping community and manufacturers quickly adjusted. It absolutely can't be stated that there are no Diacetyls left but largely and generally speaking they have been removed from use in vaping. There still remains a very small percentage of juices that have "trace amounts" of diacetyl and most manufacturers label their juice with a warning ( you will see this on Vaping Monkey's "Monkey Cream" for example ). "Trace Amounts" is very tiny but as always, vape at your own risk.

My personal opinion on the matter is I avoid it even in trace amounts but even so it is light years less significant than smoking and not to be freaked out about.

But if this was a issue 2 years ago what about the vapers that have been vaping for a few months to 2 years and missed all this, Diacetyl causes popcorn lung, which i dont know anything about. I want to know about the flavorings ppl buy, i vape a butter custard almost all day about 15 mls a day because i drip. I wanna know is this over the safety limit that i heard about supposedly.

my custard is from TFA and they say no, but digging deeper there is traces of acetoin and acetyl propionyl (or diacetyl), but what i want to know is how does the trace amounts effect a person, i started this thread to get info on this subject. I want to know more about it, I read alot about this but I just get confused and I know ppl on here that can shed light onto this subject for me and the others that dont know about it.

It was discovered when microwave popcorn manufacturers workers developed the disease by inhaling it on the job (from the butter flavoring used). Its an obstructive disease (inflamation) of the lung. I should clarify that in my first post.

Since this was a issue how many companys fixed this issue? I just would like to know what these compounds are and if its in alot of our daily things, what if any is a safe level. There are trace amounts they say but what is TRACE? Is it at such a low level it isnt a thing to worry too much or is even trace amounts bad???

"Trace Amount" by definition means an amount that can be detected but not measurable. Insignificantly small and cannot cause harm if at all.

As I said, you vape at your own risk so you either trust your source or you don't. Up to you.

As I love bakery flavored juices, I am interested in this topic as well. I am selective where I buy my juices from, but I have accepted that some of what I vape have traces of diacetyl. For me it is a calculated risk as I do not vape butttery/custard flavored juices all the time.

Not sure how trace elements of diacetyl affects a person over time. That would probably depend on someone who has pre-existing respiratory problems, and other factors maybe such as genetic pre-desposition for such diseases

Someone was awarded a multi-million settlement for developing popcorn lung. He ate 2 bags of popcorn a day for 10 years+

It was only used in some ejuices and by no means all. As I said it was used to mimic butter or cream. I havent researched this for some time but to the best of my knowledge it is known about and avoided by most manufacturers.

I'm just going to have to contact TFA and ask them maybe they can shed light onto this better for me since it is their product, Flavor West say nothing bad at all is in their custard so if i have to I might have to just buy it from them. But if they respond back i deff will post it. BTW thanks Bebop for your help. Appreciate it man.

Well, I'm only giving my opinion based on my own research a year ago or more. I don't claim to be a scientist or anything and I'm just giving an overview of my own research.

I personally don't worry about it and I don't buy "bathtub" ejuice. I love custard and cream juices and will in fact enjoy a Monkey Cream vape here and there but since I vape a very wide range of flavors it is a small amount of what I vape.

Just an opinion. Hope it helps.

I have looked into it and as Bebop said it is found naturally in some flavorings. TFA doesn't "Add" it to flavorings they sell, but do warn that it may contain trace amounts. This is due to it being in the product naturally.

The following flavors may contain diacetyl

Dairy Flavorings Hybrid Dairy
Flavorings
(Contains a substantial dairy content) Brown Flavorings Alcohol Flavorings Other Flavorings Fruit Flavorings Butter Butter Pecan Butterscotch Brandy Nutmeg Strawberry Cheese Strawberry Crème Caramel Rum Honey Cranberry Cream Cheese Vanilla Crème Vanilla Whisky Graham Cracker Raspberry Cheesecake Other Crème Flavors Coffee Pina Colada Vinegar Blackberry Milk Root Beer Float Tea Meat flavors (e.g. gravy Boysenberry Yogurt Chai Toffee Malt Other berry flavors Ice Cream Chocolate (esp. milk chocolate) Wine Fruit flavors -nearly any kind (e.g., banana, apple, grape, pear) Egg Cocoa Beer Cider Ranch Dressing Cocoa Butter Tequila Tomato Sour Cream Maple Buttermilk Brown Sugar Mayonnaise Marshmallow Peanut Butter Praline Starter Distillate or Butter Starter Distillate Hazelnut & other nut flavors

Wow that didn't paste well LOL

Well.... i think there is legislation to ban it statewide but the only bans I know of are within companies themselves that have "banned" the use in manufacturing of their own products.

That may be why I was thinking that. I did some searching on that and only found companies that have voluntarily discontinued it's use. I could have swore I heard it on CNN years ago when they discovered Popcorn Lung. I think what I heard was they, OSHA, were trying to ban it because I did find that from around 2004-2006.

There could be diacetyl or similar chemicals in your juice, and the manufacturer might not even know. They buy Flavoring that is marketed as diacetyl free, but when ordering these flavorings from over seas vendors, you really have no idea what is in them.
